To learn more about your target audience, I start off with a simple digital marketing funnel to capture leads and engage potential customers. I then use the data and feedback collected during the initial campaigns to inform the strategy going forward. Once we have this flow optimized, then we can add in other advertising platforms, if needed.

Well, obviously, the answer is "it depends." However, it will cost something. Even if you decide to do it all yourself, you still have to pay for the ads. And trying to do it all for "free" on social media, etc., is actually the most expensive route of all. Meaning, it will cost you time. A lot of it. And you won't see any results until about this time next year.
My goal is to always ensure that the client is gaining more in revenue than they are spending in marketing costs. Of course, it doesn't happen over night. But in the long run, the data is fairly predictable. If you're offering something that people already want, then you don't have to "sell" them your product or service... you only have to convince them that YOU are the best one to deliver it.
Following up on the last point, we'd expect to see a noticeable increase in website traffic in a just a week or two. From there, the leads continue to steadily increase for the next month or so. For international travel, the sale cycle is not typically short, so normally you'd expect to start marketing in the late fall or early winter for spring/summer travel. BUT, this year is anything but typical, so there are indications that there will be a lot more "impulse" bookings this year!
Yes, you "can," but should you? Marketing takes a lot of time, not to mention a lot of experience. So while you're grinding your way through the learning curve (in your "spare time"), you're missing out on potential clients that you're competitors are booking through more precise and aggressive marketing. Trolling Facebook Groups after hours isn't going to get it done.
