We sort of used child rearing as a focal point for discussing Italian society at large, and comparing those practices to their American equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rank-math-toc-block has-medium-font-size\" id=\"rank-math-toc\"><h2>Table of Contents<\/h2><nav><ul><li ><a href=\"#raising-children-italian-style\">Raising Children Italian Style<\/a><\/li><li ><a href=\"#spanking-in-italy\">Spanking in Italy<\/a><\/li><li ><a href=\"#andrea-timonere\">Andrea Timonere<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>First off, I admit that I sort of \u201cborrowed\u201d the title of today\u2019s podcast episode from Andrea\u2019s blog title because, well\u2026it\u2019s so very appealing. And actually, it seems to fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How so, you ask? Let\u2019s break it down\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Sex:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"> Well, obviously when talking about having children, you can\u2019t really skip this important first step in the process. Enough said.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lies:<\/strong> This refers to the lies that soon-to-be parents tell themselves. Example: \u201cI won\u2019t make ANY of the mistakes that MY parents made.\u201d (No, in fact you\u2019ll invent brand new ones.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Raising Children Italian Style:<\/strong> This is really the center of today\u2019s discussion\u2014and I apologize to those of you who only tuned in hoping that we\u2019d talk about the first topic on the list. In Internet marketing jargon, this is known as \u201cclick bait.\u201d And you fell for it. For the rest of you, let&#8217;s continue&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"raising-children-italian-style\">Raising Children Italian Style<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sexliesandnutella.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rickzullo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/HI-res-PRINT-use-081-bw-copia1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"raising kids the italian way\" class=\"wp-image-4561\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Beyond Italy, maybe it\u2019s a European thing. Our discussion reminded me of a book I had started reading a couple years ago (i.e. before my daughter was born) called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1KXZLhZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bringing Up Bebe<\/a>,\u201d written by an American woman in Paris. She made several observations that only now really make sense to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, she described <a href=\"https:\/\/rickzullo.com\/authentic-italian-restaurants-in-italy\/\">a restaurant scene<\/a> that probably sounds familiar to many American parents. You sit down at the table, and immediately order something for the baby to eat. Then of course, she\u2019s not hungry and is only interested is seeing how far she can launch her pasta across the room. So you rush through your meal, take turns entertaining the little monster\u2014I mean, angel\u2014then skip coffee and dessert, and leave a way-too-generous tip to compensate for the havoc your child has wrecked upon the wait staff. Looking over your shoulder as you dash out the door, you decide that maybe it was worth it, after all, to have someone else clean up the aftermath of a typical baby dinner, for a change.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sexliesandnutella.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rickzullo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/HI-res-PRINT-use-006-copia-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"raising kids in italy\" class=\"wp-image-4562\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>European kids don\u2019t seem to behave this way, and yet their parents don\u2019t appear to be heavy handed with the discipline\u2014at least not in the Mediterranean countries. Rather, the accepted norms of the cultural environment are what guide the behavior for both parents and children, even if it\u2019s more or less unspoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We touch on this in the podcast, and Andrea is very insightful with her observations. We also venture into a discussion about the older \u201ckids\u201d in Italy. Yes, I\u2019m referring to the legendary population of <em>mammoni<\/em>, who live at home well into their 30s and 40s so that they won\u2019t miss a single occasion to indulge in Mamma\u2019s <em>trippa alla romana<\/em> or to have their shirts ironed just the way they like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"spanking-in-italy\">Spanking in Italy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With regard to spanking in Italy, there has been a notable shift in societal attitudes over the past decades. In 1996, Italy passed a law explicitly prohibiting corporal punishment in all settings, including within the family. This law aims to protect children from physical violence and promote their rights to grow up in a safe and non-violent environment. As a result, the use of spanking in Italy is generally frowned upon and considered unacceptable in Italian society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Italian parents tend to emphasize communication, reasoning, and positive reinforcement as methods of discipline and guidance. They often encourage open dialogue with their children and seek to explain the consequences of their actions. Parents in Italy may use time-outs, loss of privileges, or logical consequences as disciplinary measures rather than resorting to physical punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"andrea-timonere\">Andrea Timonere<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I would like to give a big &#8220;GRAZIE&#8221; once again to Andrea for taking the time out of her double duty as career woman and mamma to her two year-old, Luca.
